2018 New York City Marathon – Race Recap

For three out of the last four years, the New York City Marathon has been without a doubt my favorite day of the year. It is a day filled with accomplishment, unity, strength, determination, excitement and so much more. Millions of people gather in the 5 boroughs to cheer on 50,000+ runners from all around the world who have spent the better part of the year training their a$$es off for one day. New York is my favorite city in the world and to having been able to experience this wonderful event for a third time, I feel truly blessed.

Training this year was so hard. The heat was debilitating. But in early October when that wave 2, orange corral assignment dropped…our excitement sky rocketed. This was the first year we had submitted a race time to get into a preferred corral. We submitted our sub-2 hour half marathon from February. And boy did it pay off – we got exactly what we wanted. Wave 2, Orange meant that we were going to be able to start our race at 10:15 am (the very next time slot after the elite men) and on the top of the bridge!

We landed in NYC early Friday morning (the race being Sunday) and headed to check in to our hotel. As superstitious as we are, we surprisingly did not chose to stay at our normal Downtown Brooklyn Aloft. At around $50 less a night, we chose to stay right next door. We immediately dropped our bags and headed into the city. We don’t like to tour quite so much as to try and not tire out our legs, but knowing that Saturday would be pretty sedentary, we were able to do a little bit of sightseeing. We met up with my parents around lunch time and grabbed a bite before heading to the expo.

We were all running with Team For Kids this time around so we were able to all pick up our bibs at the same counter. I felt like the expo was really crowded. I was excited because I had my eye on a new singlet…New Balance was the sponsor of the race (as opposed to Asics in years past), so I was looking forward to a new round of gear. I loved the NB singlet that had been sent for our Team For Kids training, and that I would go on to wear on race day, but much to my disappointment, nothing at the expo had the same cut. Adam and I purchased a few little mementos but nothing crazy struck our eye.

After the expo we made our way to our favorite lounge spot at The Roosevelt Hotel in midtown. I love that hotel so much and it’s just a stone’s throw to our routine Friday night Italian dinner at Nino’s 46.

Saturday mooring rolled around and it came time for our last training run – an easy 2 miler at the hotel gym. We were up a little earlier so that we had time to make it to the NYC Clemson Club’s gathering for their noon kickoff football game. Pizza for lunch, grilled chicken salad for dinner and a textbook day-before-the-big-race.

Daylight savings is always on our side for this race. Though an “extra hour” doesn’t do too much when the excitement takes over the whole night. Dad was at our hotel by 6am and we were off. A quick subway ride and we were about to get on the Staten Island Ferry. One of our favorite parts of race day. Everyone is just so excited to finally be there and ready to see what they can make of weeks and months and years of training.

I have always said that I run to have fun. And I still very much hold true to that. However, this year was different for us. It had been two years since our last marathon and as you know, we spent 2017 training hard and racing for PRs. We were there to have a blast, but to crush our full marathon personal best.

The anticipated hour-long bus ride from the ferry to the start village really tries it’s best to get everyone down. We know now not to drink liquids that morning until we’re about 30 minutes into the bus ride and we just know it’s coming. BUT, we made it to the start village. When we ran Adam’s first New York in 2016, we had little to no time in the village. We were rushed to get into our corral after the bus and so we made it a goal of ours to get him there with a lot of time to spare. It’s part of race day. Being surrounded by runners from all walks of life ready to experience the greatest marathon in the world is something that cannot and should not be overlooked. We were able to see the elite women go off from the base of the bridge and our excitement and determination just continued to grow.

About 20 minutes before the corral start time, runners begin to move from the actual corral in the start village to the base of the Verrazano Bridge. Thousands of people moving so slow, cheering, taking selfies, nerves. I remember what song was playing when we got to the base of the Bridge – “Shake it Out” by Florence + The Machine. It was electrifying. They mayor of New York is there along with the president of the NYRR (New York Road Runners), the Grand Marshall and other notable marathon figures. They give us their pep talk and queue Frank Sinatra’s “New York”. I could relive that moment over and over again.

Push start on the Garmin and we were off. The first two miles of this race take place on the Verrazano Bridge and against every race rule in the books, these were our fastest two miles of the day. The first mile because of pure excitement and the second mile because it’s the biggest downhill of the course. We stepped into Brooklyn around mile 2.5 and it was buzzing more than ever before. We were eager to get to 8 because that would be the first sight on our family. But when we got there, we were in awe at how fast it was going by. We spent the next hour gabbing, laughing at spectators’ signs, soaking up their energy, and simultaneously trying to PR but make time slow down because we were having too much fun for it to be over.

Brooklyn and Queens are just so full of life. The spectators all represent the different neighborhoods that we travel through. 2.5 hours and 15 miles later…we were climbing our third and toughest bridge of the day. But it’s the bridge that comes with the very best views. Mom and family were waiting for us on 1st Avenue around mile 17. They had texted me where they were and thank goodness they did because 1st Avenue was PACKED! Part of the reason we were so excited to start in the early wave was for the crowds, and boy did they show out. We traveled several miles up and before we knew it we were in the Bronx, our fifth borough, but we had to get back to Manhattan before the finish line. The Bronx is quick (only about a mile or two), but it’s spicy. It’s quieter, but it gave us time to prepare for what was coming. Though an amazing part of the race, the climb up 5th Avenue after the Bronx is mentally tough. It’s a steady incline and mentally draining. But the crowds. THEY make the NY Marathon so great and they fueled nearly every step to that finish line.

Turning into Central Park near the end, we knew we were going to PR. We actually knew we were going to crush our PR. We had earned it and we had worked so hard for it. 50 minutes off of our previous time.

Our official finish time was 4:42:54.

We crossed with smiles across our faces and made the photographers take like a million pictures of us in all our glory (see below!). But let me tell you…I was hurting. The “Green Mile” as I call it – the walk through Central Park that you HAVE to take after finishing the marathon before being allowed to enter back into civilization. Let me just talk about it for a minute…

Ok, I get that logistically they have to do it and yes, it is good for everyone’s bodies to walk it out instead of just falling out after 26.2. But it is harder to manage than the race. Race volunteers do provide recovery bags. They were a little bit further than I would have liked this go around as I was so thirsty, but they were there shortly after the medals were handed out. They also hand out heat sheets which, for the third year in a row, I did not take and regretted it. TAKE THE HEAT SHEET! The walk is long and honestly took us about an hour to make it out to our family meeting area. After you make it out of the park, if you did not have to use baggage claim, you’re awarded a post-race poncho. You can literally walk up to the volunteer and they put it over your shoulders and wrap you up and make you all warm and cozy and even give you a congratulations hug if you want one. I wanted one. I needed one.

And now I pose the question of what is the point of running a full marathon if you cannot indulge in two dinners afterwards?? We headed back to Brooklyn for Mexican first dinner (chips and salsa and an adult bev) and then to Shake Shack for second dinner (shack burger and fries).

It was the perfect day filled with my favorite people together in my favorite city. I can say with confidence this will not be the last time I run the New York City Marathon. It may be a few years and I’d like to get a few other world majors under my belt first…but I we will be back. For now, it will always hold the most special place in my heart and I still am in awe that I am a three time marathoner.

Friday Five

What are y’all doing this weekend?! I’m so glad it is Friday. My parents are coming into town tonight so we can go to the Clemson National Championship parade early tomorrow morning. It will be so cold but I am excited! I also desperately have to take down my Christmas decorations. I like to leave it up until football season is completely over (which luckily for Clemson has been early January here lately, praying that continues!) but the trees have overstayed their welcome. I love Christmas decorations, they feed my soul, but I am ready to have my house back and start really styling out forever home.

I also need to get our lives together this weekend. We have just been all over the place the past few months (obviously, from yesterday’s post) but now that the holidays are over and Christmas is officially coming down, and football season is over…it is time to get my butt in gear. I don’t feel like I function at full capacity when my life’s in shambles and the mayhem has been going on long enough. If I can make it through Sunday with meal prepping, getting the house cleaned and laundry done, in bed at a descent hour and wake up Monday morning in time to do my barre class…I will feel really good about myself! Dare to dream, right?! I’ll let you know Monday how that worked out.

Five top moments from 2018:

Sub-2 Half – I am still in doubt that we actually did this. It was a goal that we’ve has since we started running and one that we worked extremely hard to achieve. I haven’t run another half since and I don’t think it will actually set in that we’ve achieved this goal until we do run another one.

California/30th birthday – To getting our toes sandy on the San Diego beaches, to chasing Lisa Vanderpump around LA, to doubling my money on the roulette table with my amazing parents by our side…this was a trip for the books. But you can read more about it here.

Closing on our home – Obviously. After two years of looking and knowing that we absolutely found the right one for us, we can rest easy when we sleep at night.

New York marathon – A 50 minute PR will always take the cake. This race was the most fun and I cannot put into words the accomplishment that I felt finishing my third marathon. (Or I can put it into words here.)

Hosting Thanksgiving – Getting to host Thanksgiving in our new home was sigh a highlight for me. I got to show off the place we will call home for forever and that was so special to me.

Five things I want to do in 2019:

Give Adam the very best 30th birthday – I am not sure what his birthday will look like this year but regardless, he gave me the best 30th I could have dreamed of last year and I’d like to do the same.

Go to Hilton Head for The Heritage – One of my favorite weekends last year was heading down to Hilton Head for The Heritage golf tournament with some of our bests. I would like to do it again.

Eat less processed foods – Recently, I don’t know why and I don’t know how it happened, I had a very real complex about processed foods. We eat overall pretty healthy (maybe not totally over the holidays or always on the weekend), but during the week overall it’s healthy homecooked food. I could never imagine myself a vegan, or gluten free, or any sort of diet like that…but I just had a wave come over me about processed foods. And I decided I wanted to eat less of them. Someone once said, the best way to shop is around the outside of the grocery store. How true is that?! Now I am a realist and I cannot shop at whole foods every week and I cannot go to the grocery every other day for fresh food. But I would like to start filling my cart with more perishable items.

Have less screen time – I’d like to think that Adam and I spend less time on our phones than some. We can hand out and watch a movie or get through dinner without having to pick it up. But, I think we can do better. Plus, it’s really bad for our eyes after spending all day at work looking at the computer screen.

Get *back* into a routine! – I feel like since the summer we have not been in a routine. Marathon training is always tough but through the move, job changes and the holidays…we have been struggling to stay in alignment. I like to meal plan and prep, get my laundry done on the weekends, keep my incoming mail sorted, etc. and it’s all those things that have been falling by the waste side.

Five House Projects To Start & Finish:

Plants & Garden – The previous owners of our home did a great job landscaping, and I hope to keep it up. But they 1. Dug up everything that must have been in the front so it’s pretty bare and 2. Left us a garden box in the back that needs some TLC. I am excited to put it new fresh plants all in the front and start a garden in the back. This will be a first for me so we’ll have to find out if I have a green thumb or not.

Master Bath ‘Upgrade” – Our master bath wasn’t totally upgraded when we moved it. It was certainly livable but I want to do some small things like new hardware and faucets and such just to give it that new home touch that it needs.

Living Room Décor – My Christmas décor is coming down this weekend and I dread the thought of how empty our living room is about to look. BUT, I am just as excited to have that blank canvass to make it feel so cozy.

Back yard – Our back yard needs some love. We were able to over seed the front yard this past fall and it just looks beautiful. However, the tree work we did in the back left it needing a lot of love. We may end up needing some sod but I hope not. Regardless, I’m ready for the rain to stop so we can get going on it.

Storage Organization – Since moving in, we have kept the house pretty organized but I am hoping to find a balance between storing in closets and the attic. Before it gets out of hand and would be a bigger project than it would be now!

Five Ways I’m Going to Stay Organized in 2019

Filing my mail right away – I know, we’re living in a paperless world. But I’ve been able to save our butts a time or two digging into my filing cabinet. Before we moved, I had just started piling up mail with the excuse “I’ll go through it when we move”. Well guess what? I never did. Luckily for me, it was an activity I was finally able to tend to when our power went out for 36 hours a few weeks ago. It took me several hours to sort through it all and left me with a pile to shred. So let’s just keep up with it this year, k?

Unsubscribing from junk email – I get sooooo many emails, and most of them are junk. It gives me anxiety thinking about how many of them are just crap and that 1. I don’t take the time regularly to delete them so they just build up and 2. That I can click “unsubscribe” and solve my problem. It’s happening so we just won’t even have to worry about this anymore.

Stick to my editorial calendar – I like to write about fun things but a lot of times those things are seasonal or applicable to something happening at that point in life. When I don’t publish the blog, those ideas become obsolete. And that makes me sad.

Keep my drawers & Refrigerator clean – I will not, I repeat WILL NOT, just throw something in a drawer. Everything has a place and that place is where that thing will go. Also, I hate throwing food out. It’s literally like throwing money away. I vow to try and eat what’s in the fridge before either having to throw it out or buying something else to eat instead. That will keep my fridge clean. BUT if I have to throw something out, do so on Thursdays because trash pickup is Friday.

Have a chore chart – Don’t knock it ‘til you try it, folks. Our new house is the most expensive thing we own and we need to keep it in tip top shape. I keep a clean house but I am certainly guilty of letting things like cleaning baseboards and washing the windows slip under the rug. A cleaning crew is not in the budget right now so I need to make sure that I’m not forgetting about these irritating chores and keeping them in check before they get out of control.

Five Winter Beauty Must Haves

Moroccan Hair Oil – Winter static hair, amiright? Not only does this oil smell amazing, but it keeps the whispies in check all season long.

Cetaphil Lotion – My sweet hubby has terrible psoriasis that makes itself very present during the winter. This lotion is his saving grace. It’s moisturizing but so light and doesn’t leave you feeling oily or sticky.

Crest White Strips – Winter screams coffee to me so I have to make sure I am balancing out with some white strips, duh.

Hydrating Face Mask – We love the house to be cold during the night but that means that while the rest of me is warm and cozy under the blankets, my little face is poking out getting frost bite. My skin can dry out and become desperate for a moisture surge.

Dry Shampoo – Along with everything else drying up, so does my hair like I said before. I like to keep the heat off of it during the winter but since I also don’t want to go out with wet hair, dry shampoo becomes my best friend.

Life Update & 2018 In Review

First and foremost….GO TIGERS!! Clemson won the National Championship Monday night and I could not be more proud of how my team played! I am a die-hard Clemson fan and my and my husband’s blood bleed orange. I talked about some of my very favorite Clemson Game Day memories in this post!

But now let’s get back to business…2018 was nothing short of a crazy year. A life changing year, but nonetheless, crazy. Grab a coffee or a snack and settle in to read about our wildest year yet and how we landed here!

 

Queue January…we were in route to Park City, UT to marry off my brother to his blushing bride. The wedding was out of a magazine and a week on the snowy slopes with family and friends was a refreshing start to the New Year.

We also started off very unexpectedly going under contract on a house we loved. Through a lot of turmoil…the contract fell through. We didn’t know at the time but it would be for the absolute best in the long run. Shortly after this debauchery, our sweet Peggy Team scared us to death with a 10-day long upper respiratory infection. She needed round the clock care and lots of TLS but we thankfully were able to get her back to her spunky little self.

Surely enough, the anger that raged through all of that turmoil fueled our fire and we hit a major half marathon PR in late February – a sub 2 hour with an official time of 1:58:58.

We had signed up for the New York City Marathon on November 5th of 2017 so we already knew that a lot of our spring and summer weekends would be dedicated to marathon training and this PR was a major motivator to train our absolute hardest. We wanted this year to bring not only a half marathon PR but also a full marathon PR.

Late spring arrived and we found another house that we thought would be ours. Unfortunately, the competitive housing market thought otherwise. We had mixed feelings about it – parts of us were holding on to the notion that everything happens for a reason and parts of us were disappointed. Not winning the contract meant spending the summer months in the infamous tiny house. Our A/C continued to go out and we just kept on trudging through Greenville with our ever loyal realtor looking for our dream home.

 

A much needed vacation was calling our name so we packed up and headed to the west coast for my big 3-0. I recapped that trip here, but it was such a high from 2018. We had a blast and made some unforgettable memories. We knew that as soon as we rolled back into town from our trip, marathon training really would begin.

 

 

We chose a 15-week plan (as opposed to 18 weeks that we had done in the past) and began ticking away at it starting August 1st. Don’t get me wrong – I love training for a full marathon. I love the feeling of accomplishment, I love the eats that come after an 18 mile run, I love the time that it allows Adam and I to spend together. But this summer. Was. Hot. It was soul crushingly hot. I also have grown to really be uncomfortable running in the very dark, so those early morning runs that we’d done in past years weren’t always happening this time around. Treadmill runs, afternoon 95-degree runs, and full sun full humidity long runs were filling our days. We tried to stay positive and we knew deep down that any mile we had to push through in training was going to be 100x harder than any marathon mile, but we had to dig deep.  

 

So here we are, marathon training in the dead of summer living in tiny house (after deciding to take a break from looking to buy) and our A/C goes out…for the fourth or fifth time. Zillow.com here I come. We found one! We went to look and pretty much loved it. Good neighborhood, good updates, good lot. What’s not to love?! I sent it to a dear friend of mine who’d been along for the ride of our looking and she says “what about that other house in that neighborhood for the same price…” (*You know who you are ;)* ) And boy do we owe her! Forget that other one…it was perfect. We had fallen in love with our forever home. But in true market fashion, into a bidding war we went. We knew it was a multiple offer situation but we put in what we felt comfortable with and WE WON!

A 30-day close later, the papers were signed on a Friday and the keys were ours! But…of course we had an 18-mile training run the next day. We were able to move in a week after closing and it went off without a hitch. I’ll also throw in here that right after closing I put in my notice with the company I had been with for the past 5 years. I was ready to grow in my career and they were extremely supportive of it, but that meant another whopper on our plate. I applied to a lot of places and went on a lot of interviews to ensure that I found the right place for me. It was so bittersweet leaving the lifetime friendships that I had made at that job, but it was the right career decision for myself. All that to say, we did not have much time *or energy* to put into the new house. Luckily, it was already immaculate and didn’t need any work and the holidays were right around the corner which meant my everyday décor could wait until the New Year because holiday décor was on the way.

 

November 2nd rolled in like a hail storm and it was time to pack up and head north for another tour through the five boroughs. A full post coming your way on our 50-minute PR soon (yes, you read that right..50 minute PR). Without a doubt, New York City did not disappoint on its greatest day of the year. In true fashion, I have been struggling to find my stride since then. I run some but no real distance yet. I have been mixing in a lot of barre and boot camp and walking into my repertoire though and loving it.

 

During the fully anticipated post-marathon depression, we made it to a mountain weekend with two of our very best friends. It was food for the soul and extra special as it was the weekend they got engaged!

 

Thanksgiving came and went way too fast in my opinion, but we were able to host Adam’s family at our new home. The food and the company were excellent and the holiday weekend was topped off seeing Clemson clinch a perfect regular season with a rivalry weekend victory.

 

December began with a new job. And also a 36-hour power outage (one which we were not at all prepared for) but we somehow made it through. Then out of nowhere came our 6th wedding anniversary. Because of our new home, we opted to have a quiet, low-key weekend with no gifts but lots of love. We ate tacos and drank beer and watched Christmas movies. All while reminiscing about everything we had accomplished and overcome in the last 6 years.  My parents were able to come and spend Christmas with us in our new house and we did all the holiday things. It’s been a very long time since I’ve had them and that many consecutive holiday days off simultaneously and it was no less than wonderful.

 

 

I ended the year just shy of 1,100 running miles – which is almost 100 more miles than my annual 1,000 mile goal. We ran four races and achieved four PRs. And we pushed through some of the hardest miles we’ve ever run, determined to make ourselves better.

 

2019 is here and I absolutely cannot believe it. 2018 went by in the blink of an eye. Though entirely exhausting, it was truly a life changing year. It was challenging, and also rewarding. We’re tired. We’re kind of ready to take the Christmas décor down (gasp, I know) and get to really decorating our forever home. But we’re also really excited for 2019. Re-reading this post before publishing it, I realize how chalk full our year was. Adam and I made big strides personally, professionally, emotionally. I repeat that I cannot believe 2019 is here. I am excited for what will come our way this year!

Can it be Friday yet?! I am more ready for this three-day weekend than words could describe. I personally am looking forward to September. We all know I’m not a summer gal and I am just ready for it to be in my rear view. Does that sound bad?? I just feel like August for me was so long and full of a lot of unknowns and September is set to bring some exciting things! We are also beyond ready for college football season to be underway. Can I get an “Amen!”? However, out of August came a few favorites that I think will become regular parts of my life…

Josh Rose – This has been my go to beverage this summer. It is the perfect combo of light, dry, and fresh that puts a smile on my face every time I pour a glass. Josh Cellars makes a variety of different wines and all of the one’s I’ve had have been delish..but this Rose is my nectar for summer.

Wet N Wild Cushion Foundation – I love a cushion foundation because I think it is so easy to apply for early mornings heading to work – no fuss, no muss. I was a little worried this would make me shiny and not sit well on my oily skin, but if I set it, it stays in place and matte all day. I think cushion foundations tend to use up quicker than from a bottle, but this one is so cheap I don’t even care!

Brazilian Bum Bum Cream – This smells so good. It is a firming moisturizer so I have been applying it at night to some of my extra dry spots. I’ve definitely noticed a difference so it will probably be in my skin care rotation for quite some time. Did I mention it smells SO good?!

Wet N Wild Mega Length Mascara – Not having high expectations for this mascara, I ended up loving it. It applies crazy length to my top lashes and has a small enough applicator for my teeny bottom lashes. Again with the Wet N Wild price point and being a cruelty free brand…this one is a no brainer.

Bath and body works fall hand soaps – Duh. BBW always kills it with the fall scents and they had most of their hand soaps out before all the fall candle scents recently came to stores. I went and stocked up when they were on a $3 a piece sale and I will be smelling crisp for months!

Keith Urban’s Graffiti U CD – Long story short, Adam and I had tickets to see his show in Charlotte last month but couldn’t end up going. However, with the tickets came a free copy of his CD. It is so good, y’all! It is such a variety of sound from your traditional country, to rock and some slower songs as well. I have been keeping it on repeat. 

Supergoop Sunscreen – I am super serious about sun care. I would say this started (after I graduated college #hellotanningbeds) about 4 o 5 years ago. I wear spf on my face every day, I always put on very high spf sport when exercising outsize, and I always remember to have it on me just for any extended outdoor activity. This supergoop sunscreen is super light and does not leave a heavy feeling. It mixes well with my every day primer and sits under my foundation so nicely. 

IT Cosmetics Pressed Powder –  This is a pore minimizing powder that I have been faithful to all summer long. It definitely beats the heat and keeps me matte all day. It’s so light and applies smooth for an all-over flawless finish.

Morphe 25A Copper Spice Palette – I love Morphe shadows but sometimes the 35 pan palettes are just too much for a trip so I got this one for the purpose of travel and I love it. It’s got colors for every look you could want from day to night and it lives up to the phenomenal reputation of the Morphe shadow formula. 

Rose 31 Perfume Lotion – This was a sample at a hotel we stayed at recently (but I don’t remember which one!) and oh.my.gosh! It smells soooooo good. I don’t love to wear perfume in the summer mainly because I feel like it attracts mosquitoes but I cannot wait to get back to this in the fall. I massage just a small drop of lotion on my neck and wrists and am set all day.
